It was the time of year when winter was transitioning into spring. The winters in the Northern city lasted longer than usual, and the snow on the ground was just beginning to melt.

Shen Yu’s clothes were quickly soaked by the melting snow. His knees and fingers were stained with mud. The cold of the snow chilled him to the bone, and Shen Yu’s hands felt like they were being stabbed with daggers. After a while, they stopped hurting and turned stiff with numbness instead.

“Where is it? It clearly landed around here.”

Shen Yu sniffled and wiped away a bead of sweat from the tip of his nose. He used to be able to chop wood and fetch water with ease, but now any movement caused his limbs to go weak.

“I’m so useless, I can’t even sign properly. If it was me, I also wouldn’t have the patience to watch a mute wave his hands around. I should have written it down first, and then the Lord would be able to understand.” Shen Yu blamed himself, and felt like he couldn’t do anything right.

Shen Yu’s eyes suddenly lit up. He saw something red nearby, the same color as the red bean. He reached out in a hurry to grab it, but only ended up holding a clump of snow. There was a drop of red on it which wasn’t the red bean. At some point Shen Yu’s fingers had been cut by the ice and his blood had dripped onto the ground.

Shen Yu tossed away the snow in dismay, and continued to search elsewhere.

Zhenbei Wang leaned against the fence and looked down at the frantic way that Shen Yu was searching. The expanse of white snow was filled with the imprints of his feet and knees.

Calmly, he returned to the terrain model and stuck a flag to one side of the mountain pass.

A quarter of an hour later, as Zhenbei Wang was about to leave, Shen Yu came running in a hurry to stop him.

Shen Yu held out the red bean dice that he had found, and carefully presented it to Zhenbei Wang.

Bits of ice and mud clung to it, as well as bloody imprints from Shen Yu’s fingers. It looked dirty.

Shen Yu’s fingers were frozen purple, though the various cuts were now numb to the pain. His entire body was sullied with muddy water. Even his hair and face were dirty.

Under the layer of grime was Shen Yu’s smiling face, the same expression he had whenever he asked for something.

“This isn’t some child’s toy. I spent many days and nights, and only managed to carve it after a hundred and fifty-two other red beans. Please take a look. You were the one who taught me the words ‘Jun Xuan Xiao’.”

Shen Yu had more to explain, but he couldn’t say it out loud. He was so frantic that his mouth was making “yi-ya” sounds. Normally he tried to stay silent. When he was young he tried to speak, and ended up being laughed at. Right now, however, Shen Yu was in a difficult position, so he stopped caring whether Zhenbei Wang would laugh at him.

“Enough.”

Zhenbei Wang brushed away Shen Yu’s hand, the red bean dice falling on the ground. Shen Yu immediately crouched down to pick it up, only for Zhenbei Wang to step on it first. With a twist of his boot, crunch

Shen Yu’s heart made the same sound as the red bean dice, both shattering into pieces.

“Do not make these things in the future!” After saying those cold words, Zhenbei Wang stode out of  the Bingxin Pavilion. The red bean dice that he had stepped on was left broken on the ground.

Shen Yu knelt on the ground and gathered the pieces. Since it was shattered so finely, Shen Yu couldn’t pick them up. He put his sleeve on the ground and swept them together with his hands.

He opened his mouth wide but could not make a sound. His features were stretched and twisted, and a low whimper came from his mouth.

Zhenebei Wang stopped walking. Although he had seen Shen Yu shed tears, he never heard the sound of his crying. Even when his hand was broken, and when the Princess Consort’s poison made him roll on the ground in pain, he still did not make a sound.

It turns out a mute could cry, and it sounded horrible.

Shen Yu’s steps were quick and light, almost to the point of running towards Zhenbei Wang’s study, only to hear that he had gone to Bingxin Pavilion. The item in his hand let out tiny knocking sounds as it was being bumped around, but Shen Yu heard it as clearly as the excited beating of his own heart.

Since he was unfamiliar with his way around the manor, by the time he found Bingxin Pavilion he had worked up a light sweat and was breathing heavily. The cold air entering his lungs choked him painfully.

Zhenbei Wang was indeed at Bingxin Pavilion, fiddling with a military terrain model of a mountain pass.

Hearing the hurried footsteps of Shen Yu, Zhenbei Wang frowned and put down the little flags that he was holding.

“Is Song Qing not watching over you? When did I give you permission to run about within the manor?”

Shen Yu knew that he shouldn’t disobey Zhenbei Wang and roam around, but since Zhenbei Wang refused to see him, he had to come on his own.

He ran over to Zhenbei Wang. “I have something to give to you.” His gestures were not completely coherent due to his nervousness.

Zhenbei Wang still understood, and his appearance became more dignified. He had always been the one to give gifts to Shen Yu, what could Shen Yu give him? In other words, what could possibly be of value to him? His body? It was already his, and now that it’s been sullied by someone else, he didn’t want it anymore.

Shen Yu tugged on Zhenbei Wang’s hand and placed a small cube into his palm with an air of seriousness. He pushed Zhenbei Wang’s hand back towards him with a bright and hopeful look in his eyes.

It was as if he was saying, look, look, this is my sincerity. I don’t like the Emperor. The name etched on the red bean is yours.

Shen Yu was eager, and used a childish method like this to express himself to Zhenbei Wang. It was supposed to represent his pure devotion, just like the white jade prayer bead.

Zhenbei Wang held up the linglong dice and gave it only a glance. The pale jade bead was ground into the shape of a delicate cube and had a red rope strung through it. The name etched on the red bean could only be seen with close inspection.

“What are you trying to say?” The corners of his mouth held in his teasing. He tossed the dice lightly in his hand. It was quite daintily made.

After hearing that question, Shen Yu panicked a little. This was a custom from his home in Yunmeng. With the Northern city being thousands of li away from Yunmeng, however, it was natural if Zhenbei Wang didn’t understand his intentions.

“My mother told me that the people from my home would carve the names of those they love–” Shen Yu gestured in a hurry. But it was a lot to say, and his hand signs were not precise. The more excited he got the more clumsy his movements became, and after a while he still could not find the right words.

Forget it.

Zhenbei Wang didn’t have the patience to watch him wave his hands around.

“I don’t like these kinds of childish things, and I have no use for them.”

With a toss of his hand, the red bean dice flew out the window. Landing within the snow, it disappeared from sight.

Shen Yu’s hopeful smile froze on his face. His pupils contracted, and with the trajectory of the red bean dice, it felt as if he himself was being thrown off of the top of a tall building.

He suddenly turned and scrambled out of Bingxin Pavilion. He ignored the chunk of skin that was scraped off as he slipped on the stairs, and dived into the snow like a laughable and pitiable madman.

Shen Yu’s mind went blank. His only thought was to find the red bean dice. However, the white jade bead was already the same color as the snow, and the small bit of red was also covered. With a glance, it was impossible to be found.

Shen Yu burned with anxiety, crawling on the ground and searching, afraid to miss it in the blink of an eye. His delicate hands pushed away piles of snow as he searched inch by inch.

Yes.

Shen Yu nodded his head, as if that was the natural answer.

It was Hong Lian’s turn to be stunned speechless. He pointed his raised thumb at Shen Yu.

“Are you an idiot?” Hong Lian asked rudely, “You must know all about Zhenbei Wang’s past love affairs? All of those boy toys and concubines were hopelessly devoted to him. And have you seen Zhenbei Wang miss any of them after they died one after the other? What makes you think you’re better than any of them?”

Shen Yu clenched his fists, hard enough to leave pale crescent marks on his palms.

But… But the Lord treated him unlike anyone else. He said that he liked him, and added his name to the family register. The phrase “live together and die together” was just said recently, but now they’ve disappeared..

Hong Lian’s words were like needles, poking holes through all of Shen Yu’s hopes and wishes.

Song Qing couldn’t bear to watch Hong Lian’s maliciousness, and said, “Whether the Lord is sincere or not isn’t up to a prostitute like you to decide. They say that whores-” Song Qing felt that his words were inappropriate, and continued after a pause, “What does a person like you know about sincerity?”

“Are you saying that prostitutes are heartless and faithless?“ Hong Lian jumped on his words, even smiling with something like pride.

“Fortunately, I’m already familiar with this wise saying. The most reliable thing in the world is money. As for men, they’re worth less than a roasted pork trotter! But if this Master was to become my benefactor, then you’d be the best man in the world and I promise I’ll worship you like Buddha.”

As Hong Lian spoke, he waved around the ring on his finger with bluster.

Song Qing didn’t like to argue, but Hong Lian raised his ire time and time again. It’s just that this frivolous person was nimbler with their glib words, and his giggles often made Song Qing speechless.

“What? The things I said made your Master sad, so now you feel upset?”

Song Qing held back his anger and choked out, “You should be spending your free time trying to get a few more customers from the streets, just in case the Lord gets tired of you one day. What are you doing here bullying someone who can’t speak?”

“Too bad, I want to~” Hong Lian flung back his head in satisfaction and called out to the two servants standing outside. Looking around, he pointed at every item in the room one by one.

“I like this three-legged cabinet, this set of peacock vases, and this stone display. Take them all away!”

“What are you doing? The master of this room is the Lord’s concubine! You’ve merely crawled into the Lord’s bed a few times, and now you’re disrespecting your superiors?” Song Qing said, wide-eyed and glaring.

“How would I dare to run rampant like this if I didn’t already have the Lord’s permission? The Lord said that if I liked it, then I could take it back to my room. Master Song, your rank isn’t high enough, right? Can you protect your little master?”

Hong Lian took out Zhenbei Wang’s command, and seeing Song Qing’s speechlessness, he let out a cold laugh and continued. “And these charcoal braziers. My place is too cold. He’s too sickly to recover anyway, take them away!”

Two servants weren’t enough to move even the charcoal braziers away, so Hong Lian shouted for ten more people. Not long after that, Song Hua Pavilion sat emptied.

Once Shen Yu came back to his senses, the room had nothing left, just like his state of mind.

Sincerity? This was probably the only thing he wanted. Shen Yu thought he had it, but why did everything change after Emperor Ye came to patrol the North?

“It must be because the Lord hasn’t seen my true feelings.” Shen Yu had a sudden realization and after taking something out from his robes, got up and ran out of Shao Hua pavilion.

“Why are you here again?”

Song Qing made no effort to cover up his disdain. He rarely treated people like this. This person was obviously hired by the Princess Consort, but he visited Shaohua Pavilion more diligently than anywhere else. He really was shameless.

“Just coming by for a chat.” Hong Lian entered without waiting for an invitation, swaying from side to side, not caring if he was welcome or not.

“The manor is so big and the Lord isn’t here during the day. I’m just bored and looking for someone to talk to. Those servant girls don’t pay me any attention so I can only come here. Master, did you not miss me?”

Song Qing trembled in anger and took a few steps back. “So you do know that even the servants ignore you.” Like a colorful stray dog, Song Qing added in his head..

“You should see first if those servants even deserve my kindness~” Hong Lian shouted. “If this master won’t take my business, then step aside.”

“What do you want?” Song Qing stood in front of Shen Yu, guarding him.

“You’re in the wrong now for not minding your own business. Is Young Master Shen your wife or something, with the way you’re protecting him? Do you want me to go tell the Lord and have him fulfill your wishes?” The way Hong Lian ran his mouth set off Song Qing’s anger, and he had the urge to sew his mouth shut.

“Hehehehe I’m just teasing you, look at how scared you got. Relax, I won’t tell the Lord.”

Hong Lian forced Song Qing aside, and floated over to Shen Yu with light steps.

“Young Master Shen, you stay inside all day, I’m so bored. The Princess Consort hired me to win over the Lord’s favor, but look at you giving up without a fight. After all, I’m someone who does honest business, and you get what you pay for. Now I’m feeling uneasy for taking all that money.”

He said all these dignified words while obviously concealing a whole bag of tricks. However, one couldn’t even accuse him of being sinister and deceitful since he still laid everything out in the open to everyone to see.

“Do you see this? This is the jade ring that the Lord gave me this morning for satisfying him.” Hong Lian lifted his left thumb, and indeed there was a top-quality jade ring on it. Hong Lian tilted it toward the light and admired it with glee.

“Taking on this job was so worth it. Just this alone could fetch me a couple thousand taels, right? Tsk tsk, the Lord’s casual reward is worth ten nights of work for me. Do you have one? I heard that the Lord favored you heavily, he must have given you a few things?” Hong Lian asked with an air of boastfulness.

There was nothing. Shen Yu turned away. He wasn’t like Hong Lian who could ask his benefactor for rewards.

Hong Lian sneered in disdain, “Of course, a mute can’t openly ask for rewards. You’ve been with the Lord for a while now, you must have gotten something worth money from him? Let’s admire it! You have to take advantage of when men are in the throes of desire to bring up your requests, they’ll agree for sure!”

“But also you can’t talk, I wonder what it’s like when the Lord is bedding someone who’s silent. Even if he beds you to death you can’t yell. Any moaning must sound really dry, the Lord really likes my cries.”

The more he talked the more vulgar he became, but Shen Yu couldn’t help but keep listening. Perhaps he really was boring, and the Lord wanted something new. Maybe he was looking for something novel before, but now it’s become tedious..

Hong Lian’s brows suddenly turned down, and scolded, “Oh, I know, your motives are honorable. You wouldn’t condescend to do something so lowly as to ask for a reward like I do?!”

“Then what do you want? It couldn’t be the Lord’s sincerity?”

Hong Lian’s expression was mocking, as if he just heard the most preposterous joke in the world.

Song Qing thought that Shen Yu would sink into despair because of this, but he underestimated Shen Yu’s determination. He didn’t make a fuss about going to see the Lord, and didn’t become sad. He got up at the same time every day, ate meals, and took the medicine prescribed by Pian Shisi. But the more calm he seemed, the more worried Song Qing became.

Aside from this, Shen Yu would sit in front of the vanity every day, painting his face and applying powder. Dissatisfied, he would wash it off with water, and do it all over again. The layer of powder on his face became thicker, the rouge on his lips even redder, his eyeshadow becoming like the wings of a butterfly about to take flight.

“Stop drawing!” Song Qing grabbed Shen Yu’s hand as it was about to trace over another line, not understanding the reason why he was painting, and washing, and painting again over and over.

Shen Yu turned his head and gestured with a smile, “Why? Does it look bad?”

Song Qing looked at his heavy makeup, beautiful beyond comparison. Although the hand that applied the makeup was heavy-handed, the eyeshadow was not blended properly, the rouge overly strong and looked like the comical appearance of clowns in operas, none of this could conceal the perfection of his features.

“It looks bad!” Song Qing said harshly.

Shen Yu seemed a little discouraged. He’s done this dozens of times now, how could he be so clumsy and bad at applying makeup? The old maids had taught him once in a hurry, but at that time Shen Yu was so dismayed and scared to be getting married to Zhenbei Wang that in his distraction he never learned it properly.

“Then I’ll try it again.” After gesturing this, Shen Yu dunked his head in the water basin, rubbing off all the cosmetics in a hurry.

“What’s the point of mimicking that male prostitute? Are you preparing to be just as flirty as him to redeem yourself with the Lord?”

These were the most unkind words Song Qing had ever said. Impulsively, he swept all the cosmetic pots and boxes to the ground, all the colours of the makeup spilling onto the floor. Shen Yu was startled still by his sudden fit of anger, forgetting to wipe off the water dripping down his face.

“The Lord… likes it.” Shen Yu thought that lately the Lord seems to like the flashy style of Hong Lian. If he also became like that, then maybe the Lord will like him more too?

Shen Yu felt a sense of inferiority after seeing Hong Lian’s charming makeup and mannerisms, and thus shut himself in the room to learn.

“That kind of person relies on selling his looks to men and has loose morals. He’ll do anything for the sake of money. He only came to the manor because the Princess Consort gave him ten thousand taels of silver as compensation! Do you want to become like that?”

Song Qing felt a wave of disgust when he thought of the heavily made up and blushing appearance of Hong Lian.

Only now did Shen Yu learn that Hong Lian came to the manor for money. However, Hong Lian can earn money by selling his body, charging thousands per night. Zhenbei Wang didn’t want Shen Yu even if he presented himself for free, and this made him feel cheaper than Hong Lian.

“The Lord is fickle. If he likes a blind person tomorrow, then will you blind yourself? If the day after tomorrow he likes women, then can you become a woman?!”

Song Qing’s chest was heaving. He didn’t know why he was so worked up, feeling annoyed at his loss of self-control after he finished talking.

Shen Yu thought about it seriously, and then gestured, “That’s too difficult, what if I pretended like before?”

Song Qing was at a loss for words. Shen Yu was born a slave, and married into the Lord’s house as a “replacement”. His small world only consisted of the Lord, and so this obsession was etched into his bones.

“You, you don’t have to copy him.” Song Qing said bitterly. “If the Lord doesn’t like you, then someone will-”

“Aiyah~ What are the people inside doing with the doors locked in broad daylight? I knocked, so if you don’t open up then I’m letting myself in to catch you in the act~ Heehee~”

Based on the teasing words and giggles, it was clear that the person standing outside was Hong Lian.

“Aiyah, this uncle has quite the temper!” Hong Lian clung onto Song Qing’s body. “Shall I calm you down?”

Song Qing brushed him off, revolted, as if scared that he would leave a layer of rouge powder on him.

Towards the cruel and harsh Princess Consort, Song Qing showed no expression and only treated her with indifference or ignored her altogether. However, as soon as Song Qing laid eyes on Hong Lian, he immediately loathed him from the bottom of his heart.

Hong Lian didn’t seem to mind being shoved away, and daintily groomed the stray hairs around his temples.

“If this uncle can’t afford to pay up, I can give you a forty percent discount. How about just three hundred taels? You should know that I charge five hundred taels to even nobles and officials. This is just because you seem quite strong and heroic, and I like men from the military.”

As he said this, Hong Lian’s eyes wandered towards Song Qing’s crotch, his words frivolous and his gaze warm.

With a flash of the winter sun, a sword was pressed against Hong Lian’s neck.

“You better watch your head if you don’t scram!” Song Qing said with anger.

Hong Lian paused, blinked, and regained his smile. He carefully pinched the sword and moved it away.

“All’s fair if we don’t reach a deal, there’s no need to raise your weapon. So scary~” It didn’t seem like he was afraid at all, returning to Shen Yu’s side with light steps.

“I was invited by the Princess Consort to steal the Lord’s favor from you. We’ll see each other often in the future. I hope Concubine Yin can take good care of me.”

For a moment, Shen Yu didn’t know how to react. This person was polite, but the things he said made Shen Yu very uneasy.

Hong Lian turned around to walk away with a swing of his hips, and was stopped by Shen Yu.

Shen Yu stared at Hong Lian with a burning gaze. In his haste, even his gestures became jumbled.

“What are you waving about?” Hong Lian couldn’t understand, “Does the young master want to be my customer as well? But with your physique I would usually be on top. If you have enough money though, I wouldn’t mind being the bottom one time.”

“Shut up!” Unable to restrain his anger, Song Qing stepped in front of Shen Yu. This cheap person was really brazen, saying anything he wanted with no shame. Shen Yu was red with embarrassment, and even Song Qing couldn’t bear to listen any longer.

Hong Lian was at a loss, “How baffling.”

He was a clever person though, and seeing the behaviour of this master and servant pair, he suddenly understood.

“Oh~ I get it now.” Hong Lian turned to Song Qing, “You haven’t told him about me, right? No wonder this little beauty doesn’t recognize me.”

Song Qing sent him a threatening look, but Hong Lian paid no attention to it. Song Qing may look cold and severe with his heavy brows and big eyes, but actually to Hong Lian, he seemed simple, honest, and thoroughly unthreatening. Hong Lian couldn’t help but scoff a little, and try to cover up his giggles.

“Then let me explain it. Princess Consort found me to serve the Lord. So during this time I’ve been taking care of him. The Lord is really forceful, even I have a hard time taking it every night. Right now my back is still hurting.”

Hong Lian rubbed his back, ignoring the frowns and cold looks from the people in front of him.

“When you were sitting on the steps just now, you were waiting for the Lord, right? Look at this pitiful face of yours. Don’t wait anymore. With my meticulous care, he probably won’t think about you for a while~”

After saying this, and under the murderous look of Song Qing, Hong Lian walked away with a sway of his butt. As he walked, he hummed a little tune. “It was supposed to be a strong opponent, but turns out it’s just a fool with a good body~ How boring.”

Hong Lian’s sigh could be heard from far away, as if it was purposefully said for Shen Yu to hear.

Seeing the innocent look on Shen Yu’s face, Song Qing was momentarily speechless.

“My Lord, he…”

He has been seeking happiness elsewhere.

Song Qing almost let this slip to Shen Yu so that he doesn’t have to painstakingly wait anymore. But in the end he couldn’t bear to say it.

“My Lord said that he’s busy with military affairs these few days. When he’s free he’ll come to Shaohua Pavilion. Don’t disturb him, just wait patiently.”

Shen Yu lowered his gaze and his mood darkened, but a moment later he perked up with a smile, and went to sit on the stone step of the courtyard to wait.

It was if he returned to the woodshed he lived in when he was younger. After finishing his work everyday, he would sit on a stool like this to wait for his mother while she went to steal some leftover food from the kitchen. If they were lucky, Shen Yu would be able to eat a fish head or a boiled egg.

It’s the same now, except Shen Yu didn’t lack food or clothing. He didn’t need to spend the whole day dreaming of a meal, wondering if Zhenbei Wang would have any meat today. When it came to food, Zhenbei Wang did not restrict him.

As a child, he waited for a mouthful of food. Now that he’s older, he waits for Zhenbei Wang’s attention. Later, Shen Yu would realize that the more something was obtained by begging, the cheaper it was.

The servants did not come to Shaohua Pavilion, so it was even less likely to see Zhenbei Wang. After two days of waiting, Shen Yu finally heard footsteps.

Shen Yu lifted his head in delight, but saw instead a beautifully dressed person wearing full makeup and adorned in bright colours with all sorts of hair accessories. At first glance, Shen Yu thought they were a ball of confetti.

This person’s waist and hips swung broadly as they walked, and their makeup and perfume could be smelled from far away.

Purely based on their face, they were good looking. What shocked Shen Yu was how flirtatious this person could look. They were like a fire lotus in full bloom.

They also came to a halt when they saw Shen Yu, and then started giggling coquettishly after a moment.

“Are you the Concubine Yin that they speak of?” This person

“No way, it can’t be, I thought I was beautiful, but it’s my first time seeing beauty like this. Tsk tsk, look at this face, this figure, this hair. If you were at Qinhuai House, my popularity would surely be stolen by you!”

Shen Yu stared at him. Turns out he was a man; it could be heard from his voice regardless of how charming it was. Shen Yu didn’t like the way he blatantly sized him up, as if he was considering his value.

“Who is he?” Shen Yu asked Song Qing, gesturing with his hands. Unwittingly, Song Qing could now more or less understand Shen Yu’s gestures.

“Erm… uh…” Song Qing hesitated for some time, unable to speak. He looked at this person with distrust and disgust, silently telling him to get lost.

It’s a shame that this person seemed to not understand any cues, sitting down beside Shen Yu with a smile and taking his hand affectionately as if they were old friends.

“I’m called Hong Lian, the popular prostitute from Qinhuai House!” Hong Lian said proudly. “I’ve heard of you at Qinhuai House for a while now, the wet nurses that taught you were actually sent by me! Tsk tsk, a wonder like you could make men fall head over heels just by standing there. If I taught you a few more things, then…”

Shen Yu extracted his hand. His scent was making his nose itch.

“How bizarre that the Lord discarded a beauty like you in this lonely place and became a frequent guest of mine-”

“You, get lost!” Song Qing was afraid of him speaking nonsense. He also didn’t like the way he looked neither like a man nor a woman.

Xiahou Lian woke up early in the morning. He got dressed and was about to brush his teeth and wash his face. As he walked towards the door, he heard Lianxiang talking to Xie Jinglan. He wanted to give them privacy, but he heard that his name was mentioned. So he stopped at where he stood.

“Young master, that rascal Xiahou Lian is unreliable. Most of the day, he doesn’t do his work and he would roam around in the manor. Roaming around is not a big deal, but he would often sneak around and steal, and his hands and feet are always dirty. How can we tolerate such a person in the house? He said that he is going to get you to see Mr. Dai? More like looking for trouble! Furthermore, when Mr. Dai is selecting his disciples, the master and the lady surely will be there too! If you go there, the lady will definitely won’t let you off easily!”

Xie Jinglan remained silent for a while without saying a word. “Lianxing is not completely wrong about Xiahou Lian. Before he came to the manor, he must have been wandering around the town thieving. He must be dirty and covered with a disgusting odor.” If it was someone else, Xie Jinglan would be very contemptuous and disdainful to be friends with them. Not understanding why, when it comes to Xiahou Lain, he is not displeased with him at all. “Maybe because Xiahou Lian is an honorable person.”

Xie Jinglan made up his mind. The facts are, in the eyes of others, Xiahou Lian has poor manners, a sloppy eater, doesn’t sit properly, slacking, shaking his legs while sitting and it annoys many people. But Xiahou Lian is clever. He has a carefree nature and free spirit. He is loyal and openly speaks his mind and is an unbridled ranger. “Even if Little Lian doesn’t take me there, I’ll go myself.” Xie Jinglan said without hesitation.

“Young master! You will get in trouble because of that rascal!”

“He might still have little thievery traits. But since he arrived at the manor, he steals because of me. I will discipline him strictly in the future and order him to not to do those things again. He doesn’t have a bad heart, don’t be overly concerned about this.” said Xie Jinglan, “Don’t you agree, auntie?”

“Yeah, Little Lian is still young, and didn’t make any major mistakes. Apart from helping the young master steal some books, snacks, and treats from the courtyards. He hasn’t done anything bad. All children love to eat treats. Lianxing, just bear with it.”

Xie Jinglan and Auntie Lan defended Xiahou Lian with every word they spoke. Lianxiang had to give up. Xiahou Lian listened for a long time, speechless. “Women are such menaces. When have I slacked off? I did wander around, just to get information and listen to the news. If I was to stay put in the courtyard all day long, how can I get information that Dai Shengyan is accepting disciples? As for the treats, it was left on the table in the pavilion, unwanted. Not as if anyone is going to eat it, so I just ate a few, not all of it.”

That girl, Lianxiang, is a snaky fox. She sure knows some foxy tricks of getting favoritism. She is afraid Xiahou Lian might surpass her and be more favorable, and become Xie Jinglan’s number one confidant. Her working routines are making meals and washing dishes, and she thinks that she earns favoritism. When she gets a cut, such as a small needle prick, she would cry “it’s so painful!!” loudly. She wants everyone in the manor to know that she has gotten injured at work.

Even though Xiahou Lian cherishes young girls, girls that are beautiful are known as “Bella” and “Jade”, at-least-as beautiful as Xie Jinglan. In his opinion, Lianxiang seems trashy and bitchy. Unfortunately, Auntie Lan is a good old, senile person. As for Xie Jinglan, an unworldly teenager. Even though he is a hard-ass, he’s still a rigid and inflexible teenager. He won’t understand the bitterness and cunning of a female’s heart. He thinks Lianxiang is hardworking and loyal. “Forget it.” thought Xiahou Lian. Xiahou Lian is a good guy. He’s not going to hold a grudge on pity little girls like her.

Fortunately, even when the truth was said, Xie Jinglan still defended him. Xiahou Lian felt overwhelmed with joy. He deliberately made a noise, so the people outside would know that he is awake. Then he went out to where they were. After he finished washing up, out came a sound of chains and lock jingling. Lianxiang ran over and took a look, and exclaimed, “Young master, they locked our courtyard!”

Then, a voice came from outside the courtyard and proclaimed, “The lady has ordered. A noble guest is coming to the manor. To prevent any of your clumsy riff-raff from disturbing our distinguished guest, none of you are allowed to step one foot out of the courtyard.”

Xie Jinglan has no expression. Auntie Lan looked worried, “What are we going to do? They locked the door. How are you going to see Mr. Dai?”

Lianxiang still pursues her cause, “Let’s just forget it then.”

Xiahou Lian looked over at Xie Jinglan and they shared a glance. Both teenagers had the same thought. “If the door is locked, then climb the wall.”

The four of them moved the tables and chairs in the room to the wall and stacked them on top of each other. Xiahou Lian climbed up first, followed by Xie Jinglan. Auntie Lan and Lianxiang stood guard below as they looked up at them with concern. Lianxiang called out a last warning, “Young master, you have to be careful! Little Lian, if the lady gets angry, you have to protect our young master. If anything happens to our young master, I will not spare you!”

“I know, I’ll protect him. I won’t let a single hair of his be harmed.” Xiahou Lian said perfunctorily, waiting for Xie Jinglan to climb the wall. With one leap, Xiahou Lian jumps off the wall. Xie Jinglan hesitated a bit. The wall is very high, he is a bit scared. But he doesn’t want Xiahou Lian to see his fear. Shutting his eyes, Xie Jinglan jumped down from the wall. He didn’t land on the ground as he predicted. Instead, he landed on someone’s warm embrace. Xie Jinglan opened his eyes and saw Xiahou Lian’s face close to his. He was shocked and jumped off from his arms.

“If you jump like that, you surely are going to break your legs. When you jump off a wall, you have to spread your legs, and before landing you have to brace your jump by bending your knees, almost like squatting. If I were not here to catch you, you would be cripple before you start your quest.” Xiahou Lian looked serious as he gave pointers.

Xie Jinglan went silent, “…”

“Brother Lian!”

Both of them stood frozen. They saw a young girl, panting as she ran towards them, and said, “Mr. Dai has changed the examination location to the Wangqi Pavilion by the Yingbo Pond. He demanded all changes to be ready in an hour.”

“Brother Lian?” Xie Jinglan looked at the girl suspiciously.

Xiahou Lian smiled and said embarrassedly, “This little girl is Lanxiang, a servant that served in the study. We met a few days ago. Thank you, Lanxiang. I promise to treat you some osmanthus cake tomorrow.”

Lanxiang stuck out her tongue and said, “You better remember! I snuck out here to warn you. Now I have to rush back.” After finishing speaking, she salutes them goodbye and rushes off.

“You are quite capable. You have only been in this manor just for a few days, and you have coerced Lanxiang. It’s a big crime for a secretive relationship among servants, privately giving and receiving favorites. Even I can barely survive here by keeping myself undetected. I won’t be able to save you if you get caught.” Xie Jinglan snorted.

Xiahou Lian’s ability in courtship is astonishing. The young girl that just left is surely not his only victim. The way she called his name is very affectionate. Xie Jinglan glared at Xiahou Lian with jealousy and snorted again.

Xiahou Lian cried out, “Secretive relationship, private giving and receiving? I have only secretly given to you. Like the objects that are collecting dust under your cabinet.”

Xie Jinglan snorted, “What are you talking about? We both are males, how could you call that ‘secretly giving or receiving’?”

Xiahou Lian stuck out his tongue and made a ghost-face. Before they left the courtyard, Xiahou Lian gave Xie Jinglan his clothes to wear and his coarse headscarf. If one did not look closely, Xie Jinglan would look like one of the low-born servants. Xiahou Lian took out two trays that he had hidden in the grass, holding it, bowing their heads, as they made their way to the edge of the Yanbo Pond unimpeded.

Wangqing Pavilion is built on Yanbo Pond. Underneath is a sparkling pool of water. In the front, there are railings. On the second level, you can overlook the entire premises, it’s an elegant view. After all, the Xie family foundation is based on harmony and tranquility. The pavilions have vibes of literati and elegance.

It is still early, and the two of them hid behind an artificial rock mountain and waited for the audience to arrive. Xie Jinglan took off Xiahou Lian’s clothes and head-scarf, and changed back into his clothing. Xiahou Lian helped to re-tie his hair and address it with a headband. After reorganizing his clothes, he became a beautiful and literati young man again.

You can’t blame Xiahou Lian for using “beautiful” to describe Xie Jinglan. He does have this girly and fragile appearance, but he carries this righteous and confident aura. With full of arrogance, he looks like he is untouchable. This arrogance could either be describe as dignified, if they were being kind, or pretentious, if they were less so. Xiahou Lian reluctantly understood this meaning as he stood looking at Xie Jinglan.

The servant stood as the master sat. Xiahou Lian took out his snacks to eat, as Xie Jinglan took out a scroll to study. By the artificial mountain, stood a blossom plum tree. The branches are stretching diagonally over their heads. The petals of the flowers fell from the tree. Xiahou Lian held his arms and thought in a daze, these days are leisurely, just a bit cold.

As the noise gathered outside, Xiahou Lian estimated that the time was approaching. From the crevices of the rocks looking outward, the Xie family’s children led with their book-boy entered the Wangqing Pavilion in threes and fives. Everyone dressed fashionably and radiant. On their left side, hung a fragranced pouch. On their right wore a jade jue, and some even have a jade flute secured on their belt.

The scene is like a battlefield, as they marched in propaganda (described in Taoism). A ceremony of apprenticeship receiving their teacher. Not too far off resembling the emperor’s imperial examination scene.

In contrast, Xie Jinglan’s robe and cloak are desolate. If he stood among them, no one could guess that he is also a child of the Xie family. They would think that he is a low-level servant that is not even suitable to wait at the table. Barely passable to carry their shoes.

It’s just that Xie Jinglan has the face of a goddess. Xiahou Lian thought to himself, “If I were the one choosing apprentice, I would have chosen Xie Jinglan. So what if they wore the best outfit? A good-looking face is more comforting. Looking on their faces, some are crooked, some even look old and wrinkled.” Xiahou Lian became more confident in Xie Jinglan.

Xie Jinglan’s heart did not fluctuate. In his eyes, the Xie family’s children are groups that are going to be a stumbling block that was bound to be kicked to the side of the road by him or a stepping stone to help him to get to the next level. The better they dress, the more they can bring out Xie Jinglan’s independence. Although he may not be the best, he might be the most special.

Furthermore, Mr. Dai is the same as him. He was born to a mistress, grew up in a poor family, and he struggles as a young man. Illness must be treated with the right medicine. When you are seeking an apprenticeship, you can’t do as you please. When Mr. Dai sees him like this, he will surely think of his hardships studying years and feel pity for him.

Xie Jinglan glanced at Wangqing Pavilion and said, “We can’t enter through the main entrance.” Indeed, several servants are guarding the main entrance. If you walk through the main entrance, you will be stopped. Xiahou Lian looked around the pond and saw a small boat parked on the other side. He said with joy, “Let’s row over to the pavilion. Everyone is on the second floor. Rowing over there can easily be noticed by Mr. Dai. As long as he notices us, even if the lady wants to stop us, she can’t.”

Right as he finished his statement, Xie Jingtao appeared at the pavilion. After being whipped, the fat boy was struggling to walk, helped by his book-boy. He limps, followed by his staggering pace. His whole body is full of fat, bounces like the waves as he staggers up the stairs. An epiphany hits Xiahou Lian. He suddenly understands why he is called “Xie Jingtao” (“Jingtao” means stormy waves). He staggers up to the second floor and sits down at the very front row, on the first seat. The pavilion quakes under him as if it might collapse the entire Wangqing Pavilion. Even from a distance, Xiahou Lian felt that the ground was shaking. The last to arrive is the elders.

Lanxiang describes Mr. Dai as a fire-rod in the kitchen, and is skinny enough that all you see is chatting-teeth and old fragile bones, which definitely is a good and honest official, otherwise, he won’t starve himself like this. Xiahou Lian recognized at once that the skinny old man is Mr. Dai. Indeed, as Lanxiang described, He is very skinny. He has a thin neck and a well maintained long white beard. It is the same as a painting of an old spiritual man.

There is no time to look for Xie Jinglan’s hypocrite-of-a-gentleman father, Xiahou Lian gave a command and they both ran toward the bank on the opposite side of the pond as quickly as possible. Not long after, someone saw them. At first they were stunned. After they took a second look, they discovered that it was the third young master of Autumn Wu Courtyard, then they started to chase after them.

“Everyone, Hurry and block the third young master!”

“Block them!”

While Xiahou Lian was running, he drawed out a slingshot. Pak, pak, pak, aiming the sling and shooting backwards with pebbles. He has excellent marksmanship. He didn’t miss a target, some people even fell into the pool. The stone was used up quickly, and Xiahou Lian kept up the pretense he was still shooting at them. Some thought that he was still shooting stones and took cover.

The gravel road by the side of the pond is narrow. If the people in front stop in an emergency, the people that followed behind wouldn’t be able to stop in time. They will immediately collide, like a domino, and fall to the ground.

Xie Jinglan is both scared and excited. He had never run like this before. He had never been so unscrupulous. He should have rejected Xiahou Lian’s instructions, but when Xiahou Lian yelled “run” he didn’t know why his body reacted faster than his brain. Like a sharp arrow shot from a bow, without a thought in his head, dived into the cold wind and raced in desperation.

The two teenagers are vigorous, they zig-zac through the forest by the pond, like two fluttering birds. Gradually adding a great distance from their pursuer. Seeing that they were almost there, Xiahou Lian raised his right hand, and lightly clasped the spring at the right wrist with his left hand. Just as he stepped on the bank, out came something that flew out and pierced through the rope tie in the water. Xie Jinglan was stunned by what he saw, then he heard Xiahou Lian shouted, “Jump!”

Both of them jumped into the boat together. The boat rocks violently. Xie Jinglan couldn’t grip his bearing, and almost fell over. Xiahou Lian grabs his collar and pulls him back on the boat. Xiahou Lian quickly picks up the oar and pushes it into the water with all his might. The small boat went sailing like a fallen leaf that is floating on the water. As he pedals, the ripples form, swaying as they sail towards the pavilion. The servants who came after them could only stop on the shore, helpless. Watching Xiahou Lian and Xie Jinglan as they got further and further away, disappearing into the slow gathering fog.

Xie Jinglan resisted the urge to push Xiahou Lian’s sleeves up to take a look. Instead, against the shadow of the sun, he straightened his clothes. Standing on the side of the boat with his hands behind his back. They have made such ruckus back at the shoreline, Mr. Dai must have noticed them. He must maintain a proper manner.

The people at Wangqing Pavilion can’t understand what happened, and in that distance, they can’t see their faces. They could only see two teenagers being chased by a group of servants. In the end, they jumped into the boat and sailed to the observation deck. The teenager that is standing on the side of the ship, standing against the cold wind, looking out into the waves from afar, has a bit of distinct graciousness.

Dai Shengyan laughed and said, “Is he one of Xie’s children? Amusing indeed. Hurry up and escort them up here.”

Xie Binfeng was ashamed and apologized, “The nature of a juvenile child’s behavior, acting unruly. Your disciple is fully responsible for not properly educating those boys. Teacher, please don’t be offended.”

“Not so. Teenagers at their age, constantly studying and staying locked up is a waste of their youth. With such beautiful scenery, if you don’t go for a walk, then it’s a waste of living.” Dai Shengyan laughed, his pleats were blooming, revealing a mouthful of rotting yellow teeth.

Xie Jingtao’s eyes are sharp. He recognized Xie Jinglan with first glance. Hearing Dai Shengyan’s defending words, his heart bitter. He bowed and played respect, and said, “Mister, you are mistaken. I recognize those two boys. They are unlearned and delinquents. They are notoriously unfilial descendants of the Xie’s family. Especially that Xie Jinglan. It was just a few days ago he stole my belongings. It’s disgraceful. Because of the brotherhood, I never confront him.”

Dai Shengyan stroked his beard and paused, said, “Oh… Is that the fact?”

FSTG Chapter 2 – Joining the Army

Title: Face Slapping the General
Author: Superpanda
Translated by Xing
Edits by Ning Ning & Asaki

In this highly developed technological era, it wasn’t a good decision to join the army directly. If you didn’t study in a military academy and weren’t familiar with science and technology, you could only work doing simple jobs and your promotion opportunities were quite limited.

However, Wu Qiao had no other choice.

He enlisted himself into the army directly after graduating, and became a low-level soldier after passing a few simple checks. Low-leveled soldiers had small chances of going to the battlefield. They just did some auxiliary work such as growing vegetables and raising pigs in military camps, so they weren’t strictly screened like in military academies.

After officially becoming a soldier, one would be interviewed.

Before the interview, Wu Qiao made preparations very seriously, hoping to be assigned a relatively “better” job. He was quite confident about getting a better job, after all, he had excellent grades and a high IQ.

However, the situation backfired. The interviewer had only asked Wu Qiao one question, “Why did you join the military?”

Wu Qiao answered, “Because I want to change the world.”

He was then assigned the worst job— mining.

Saying this job was “the worst”, was mainly because of the extremely harsh mining environment all year round. If the spring breeze was like a mother’s hand, spring in mining grounds was the hand of a cruel stepmother.

Presently, the most widely used energy source was “Qingsha”. Qingsha released a large amount of energy and has been supporting the empire since it was discovered 200 years ago.

Qingsha = green sand

The man was just an ordinary lecturer at an eighteenth-rate university. His friends knew that he liked all kinds of stones since he was young, so they would bring stones from different planets back as gifts whenever they traveled. 200 years ago, Qiu Yanting received a gift one day from a distant planet from a friend. He inadvertently realized that if a specific particle is used to impact the nucleus of the stone, a lot of energy can be generated. Because the stone was green, he named it “Qingsha.”

At that time, traditional resources were facing exhaustion, and a new alternative energy source was urgently needed. Qingsha’s discovery eliminated panic, and has been used by the army and civilians since. Qiu Yanting’s name was written in textbooks, and became a god who saved the world.

Qingsha only existed in a few planets that were all located on the edge of the Empire. Only the imperial government had the authority to mine and deal with the green stone. The Empire didn’t directly export raw Qingsha, but set up a company in the Republic in order to directly control the energy source.

After the Republic’s sudden long-planned declaration of war on the Empire, the Empire had reduced its Qingsha supply to the Republic and increased prices significantly. However, the Republic was already prepared for the war. It had stockpiled a large amount of traditional energy sources and made up its mind to end the war as soon as possible. The loss of energy to the people of the Republic was far greater than the loss of the military. This has always been the case in history.  In the period of material shortage, the people of the Republic have always suffered first. Therefore, the Empire was under the pressure of “humanity”, but ultimately gradually resumed energy exports to the Republic. Although the two sides signed an agreement stating that the energy couldn’t be used in the war, it was impossible to know whether the Republic had exploited any loopholes in the agreement.

The mining process of Qingsha was very complicated. Even today there were still imperfections in the pure use of machines to mine it. It was impossible to distinguish and separate the green stone from the surrounding waste with extreme precision, leading to a waste of raw materials. The imperial government used to supervise the company’s hiring of ordinary workers to mine, but, for some reason, the work was handed over to the military.

Wu Qiao has now been mining for a year and a half, and everyone annoyed him.

Wu Qiao always made suggestions to the officials, telling them about new methods he thought could improve the work process and increase efficiency. In fact, among the “miners”, no one except Wu Qiao wanted to improve their working conditions. Everyone just wanted to spend two years mining quietly and then use their status of “veterans” to get benefits and find better jobs. Whether they could dig more wasn’t what they cared about.

That was it. There were hundreds of people in the team and all of them hated Wu Qiao. Whenever he was mentioned, all the comments were “always high-profile” and “he cares too much.”

Wu Qiao’s only friend was Donovan from another team.

“Hey,” Donovan asked curiously in a somewhat gloomy weather, “why were you sent here?”

“Huh?”

“You look very clever.” Generally speaking, people who were sent to the mines were very physically strong and not very clever since there was no use for clever people to do this kind of work.

“…I don’t understand either.” Wu Qiao really didn’t understand. “The interviewer only asked me a question, and then decided to send me here.”

“What was the question?”

“He asked me why I wanted to join the military.”

“How did you answer?”

“I said I want to change the world.” Even now, Wu Qiao still thought he gave a very ordinary answer.

“Hahaha, no wonder you were sent here!” Donovan laughed.

“…”

“Your answer is so annoying!”

“…”

Donovan thought for a while. “But it really sounds like something you would say, so it isn’t surprising that you actually said it.”

“…?” Wu Qiao was a little dazed. Everyone found him annoying, he knew this very well, but he never thought it would be annoying to say he wanted to change the world.

Was he a really an annoying person, regardless of what he does?

While thinking about this very serious question, a hash alarm sounded in their ears. “All personnel should evacuate immediately…”

Wu Qiao raised his head.

At this time, cluster bombs and laser missiles were falling from the sky. The loud noise was deafening. The sky had been torn apart by the beams of laser weapons and the shock wave caused by the bombs swept the surrounding dust, causing layers of air and smoke to envelope the center of the mining ground. All the bombing targets were instantly swallowed by a sea of fire, the pressing heat wave hit everyone’s nerves.

“What’s wrong?” Donovan asked.

“Get down!” Wu Qiao shouted.

Obviously, this mining ground was being attacked.

Then, Wu Qiao heard a “pia”.

He turned his head and saw that behind him was a dilapidated mecha. What he had heard was just the sound of it falling to the ground⸺ the mecha seemed to be fighting hard against the intruders.

After a while, the mecha flew into the sky with a “rou” sound, and it seemed to be going to make a final attack. Unfortunately, it was besieged by its opponents as soon as it appeared in the sky. With a burst of “biubiubiubiu” [1] sounds, the mecha exploded in midair. With a loud noise, various parts scattered, and the wreckage spread in an area with at least a kilometer.

“My God…” Donovan covered his mouth.

“Hurry and hide in the nearest mine!” Wu Qiao said to Donovan.

    “What about you?”

“I have something else to do.”

    “What’s the matter?” Donovan asked.

Wu Qiao didn’t answer, but hunched over and left quickly.

He had a very strange feeling that he had to go see where the mecha fell just now.

It fell close, so it didn’t take long for Wu Qiao to reach his destination. Because of the heavy mecha’s landing, all the surrounding vegetation had been skewed.

In the rubble, Wu Qiao saw a man leaning against a tree trunk.

He was wearing an imperial military uniform and he had blood on his face and body, he seemed unable to stand up.

Wu Qiao thought to himself, Sure enough, the mecha that had rushed to the sky was on autopilot. The people inside had escaped before that… Since this was a person working for the emperor, he naturally wanted to save him.

“Hey.” Wu Qiao patted his face. “Hold on, I’ll take you to the mine.”

 “……Do not touch me.”

Wu Qiao patted his face again. “Open your eyes.”

“You…”

“I’ll take you into the mine.” Wu Qiao repeated, “Try to walk.”

The man looked up to the distance, and said in a very hoarse voice, “I’ll tell you where to go.”

“……huh?”

“Don’t go into the nearest mine, go to another one not far from here.”

“Why?”

“I don’t want to speak too much, just do what I say.” He then closed his mouth, unwilling to utter another word. His physical condition seemed very bad.

Wu Qiao swept his gaze on him.

It seemed that the seriousness of the injury wasn’t low… He looked like the type to always only give orders. It seemed he was completely unaware that he needed to rely on himself to get rid of the current dangerous situation.

Wu Qiao didn’t ask anymore. He was just a low-level soldier, and there wasn’t any reason to ask any questions at all.

They entered a mine.

“Wait a minute.” Wu Qiao said, “There’s some medicine in the mine. I’ll go get some to treat your injuries first.”

“…”

There were no high-level medicines in the mine and no treatment cabins were installed. There were just simple medicines that the miners might use.

Wu Qiao fed the other some anti-infection medicine, sprinkled hemostatic powder on his wounds, and finally injected an analgesic injection. After doing this, Wu Qiao paused, and then asked again, “Should we wait here?”

“No.”

“Then……?”

“There is a passage here, we need to go deep underground.”

“What?” Wu Qiao shook his head,“There’s no passage here, what you said is impossible.”

The man was impatient again. “What would you know?”

“I’ve been here for a year and a half, I know everything—”

Wu Qiao abruptly shut up, because the man was struggling to go deep into the mine.

When he reached a wall, he took something out and did something. The wall in front of him suddenly reorganized and a passage that Wu Qiao had never seen before appeared in front of him.

Wu Qiao’s eyes widened, and the deep secret path reflected in his pupils⸺he never knew there was a secret passage here.

In a not-so-short walk inside, the person entered the long-digit password, performed fingerprint recognition and pupil recognition, and finally entered an empty room.

As soon as Wu Qiao stepped in, he was shocked.

⸻There were four huge mechas in the room.

Wu Qiao was shocked to know that there was such a thing here.

The metal shells reflected cold light, exuding a sense of pressure in the silent room.

“This is…!” Wu Qiao was so surprised that he didn’t know what to say.

“The latest mecha.”

“I was thinking, why are there robots here?!”

“What do you think?”

“Is this a secret research base?!”

“Do you still not understand?”

Wu Qiao couldn’t help but wonder whether this Emperor’s subordinate always wanted to beat him up.

There was a research base here that Wu Qiao had never heard of. Its location here was probably chosen because it was close to the energy source. If another base was built, the continuous transmission of energy may arouse the suspicion of the enemy.

Wu Qiao was silent before asking again, “What do you plan to do when you enter the mecha?”

The man smiled. “The other party’s purpose is these mechas, and they’ll soon find them here. We escape with the best one, and then destroy the remaining three.”

“Destroy…” Wu Qiao repeated the word.

“It’s a fact that the two of us can’t deal with them, and the mine garrison can’t do it either. Now that the mine’s communication system has been destroyed, we must evacuate the mine as soon as possible and explain everything to the supporting fleet⸺ they’re now coming to our location at full speed. The invaders are hiding in mechas we’ve never seen before. They can escape the current surveillance network of the Emperor. We encountered them by chance on the way here.”

“Where is your mothership?” Wu Qiao asked.

The man pressed his lips tightly. “Probably… no longer here”

“……Sorry.”

“Wait for me in front of the mecha on the far left. I’ll turn it on.”

Wu Qiao waited for a long time, when the mecha’s eyes suddenly lit up.

The whole machine seemed to be alive as it activated part by part in a series of system sounds.

Wu Qiao was taken into the inner space of the mecha.

This was his first real contact with a mecha. He had driven them countless times in his dreams before, and now that he was actually sitting inside one, his body was filled with adrenaline.

 “It’s called Ya Jiu.”

 “Ya Jiu?”

“Yes, Ya Jiu is the name of a famous sword in ancient times.”

Wu Qiao was thinking about the name and he suddenly heard Ya Jiu’s voice. “Body condition scan… failed to meet standards.”

Wu Qiao thought to himself, Does this mean this guy’s injury was too seriou…?

“Idiot!” Wu Qiao saw the injured guy hit the console, “Hurry up!”

The mecha replied ruthlessly, “Body condition scan… failed to meet standards.”

“If you don’t start up now, I will destroy you!”

“Body condition scan… failed to meet standards.”

“…”

In the terrible silence, Wu Qiao risked his life and asked, “What’s wrong?”

“I’m badly injured⸺the mecha program thinks it can’t go to war. It’s certain that it will die if forced to go. This is one of its protection mechanisms.”

“Then…what should we do now?”

He took a deep breath. “I order you to pilot it.”

“Me?!” Wu Qiao’s fingers stiffened.

This kind of thing was a dream come true, but Wu Qiao never thought it would happen in this situation.

“Yes, you.”

Wu Qiao lowered his eyes to look at the console, only feeling his blood surging. He suddenly clenched his fists. “Okay. I’ll do it.”

“Have you ever piloted a mecha?”

“I often play simulation games.”

“…You don’t have any practical experience, yet you just agreed? You’re so bold.”

“…” Wu Qiao did always feel good about himself, believing that he could finally materialize all his dreams. Wu Qiao fell into depression for a long time when he was rejected by the military academy. After that, he immediately felt that this was just a small obstacle in his extraordinary life, and that maybe it was the destined shortcut. He believed that soldiers should be calm and self-sufficient, so he tried his best to stay calm on the outside, but in fact, he was very scared.

He felt that he definitely wouldn’t die here, as for why he couldn’t die… he just couldn’t.

The mecha scanned Wu Qiao. “Body condition scan… meets the minimum standards.”

“…”

“Now, set it up.”

“Ok.”

Wu Qiao heard the person next to him speak again. “Only manual control and voice control are available at the moment. We’ll use the manual controls and synchronize your voice later.”

“Ok.”

“Brainwave manipulation requires long-term training. “There’s absolutely no possibility you can use it.”

“Ok.”

The setup program in front of him popped up and Wu Qiao looked at the first step:

[Input Name]

Wu Qiao used the keyboard to enter his name: Wu Qiao.

After entering his name, his finger stopped in midair. He felt something was wrong.

Turning his head to see what it was, the person behind him was looking at him as if he had seen a ghost!

SL Chapter 73 – Copying books

Title: Silent Lover
Author: Qiang Tang
Translated by Condz
Edited by Nata

Less than 3 days later, the details of Emperor Ye’s secret plan appeared in a letter to Zhenbei Wang.

Zhenbei Wang took one look and then tossed the letter in the brazier. A pair of brightly coloured hands appeared from behind to wrap around him.

“My Lord, it’s late. You’ve been busy the whole day, isn’t it time to rest? Let me help you relax.”

A flirtatious beauty clung to Zhenbei Wang. The voice was clearly that of a man, but the words were more charming than what any woman could say, but not to the point of being disgusting.

Zhenbei Wang grabbed his hand, and spun around to pin him down on top of the bed.

Shen Yu did not manage to regain Zhenbei Wang’s trust. Instead, he returned with a battered and tired body and sank into a deep sleep. After he felt better, he bathed and dressed himself, and prepared to do the same thing again.

Once more, Song Qing stopped him. In the past few days, Song Qing had stopped him three times for various reasons.

“The Lord is not in the manor,” Song Qing said stiffly.

Shen Yu inclined his head. He’s gone again? Was he busy with military affairs, or did he just not want to see him?

“When will he be back?” Shen Yu gestured.

Song Qing hesitated. He wasn’t used to lying, and decided to just stay silent.

“Are you lying to me?”

“No.” Song Qing denied it in a hurry. Seeing the frustration in Shen Yu’s brow, he swallowed uneasily.

“The Lord said that you angered him, so he wants you to copy all of the scrolls from before as a punishment. Once you’ve finished copying them, you can go see him.”

Song Qing really could not think of any more excuses. The scrolls that Zhenbei Wang left here, along with the military strategies he wrote, various training manuals and more, total at least a hundred. It should take Shen Yu some time to copy it all.

Shen Yu’s brow relaxed, and he smiled.

This was great, he just had to finish copying the scrolls and then he could see Zhenbei Wang.

Shen Yu practiced writing many words, and studied a couple books on military strategies. Living alone in this pavilion with no one to talk to, he spent his time looking at Zhenbei Wang’s personal documents and memorized them to heart. In case Zhenbei Wang was to test him, he would not answer wrongly.

Shen Yu ran outside joyfully and grabbed a handful of snow to put on the ink slab, melting it over the bronze basin. Then he carefully ground the inkstick, picked up the brush, and started copying.

Song Qing watched from the side. Since Shen Yu learned everything from Zhenbei Wang, his penmanship mimicked Zhenbei Wang’s to some degree. However, the basic structure was starkly different. Zhenbei Wang’s words were bold and forceful, whereas Shen Yu’s words lacked a level of resoluteness.

Deep into the night, Song Qing got bored of standing and took a nap next to the door. When he opened his eyes again, Shen Yu had lit a candle, and was still sitting there copying. Aside from a few yawns, it seemed like he hadn’t moved an inch.

Song Qing felt a stab of guilt. He knew Shen Yu would take any task seriously. Why did he lie to him, and make him do something that was bound to end up fruitless?

Song Qing could not bear to stay near. He was afraid that in a bout of impulsiveness, he would spill the cruel truth to Shen Yu.

Two days later, with the sky still not quite light, Shen Yu held a basket of scrolls with delight and woke Song Qing up. He had also dressed himself up, putting on face powder and liner, although not quite enough to conceal the dark circles under his eyes.

As if he was presenting a treasure, Shen Yu stuffed a heavy basket of scrolls into Song Qing’s arms, his smiling eyes like two twinkling crescent moons.

Two restless days and nights later, Shen Yu had finished copying the scrolls. He hadn’t shut his eyes for even half an hour.

Even without his gestures, Song Qing knew what he wanted to say.

“I’ve finished copying, quick, bring me to see my Lord!”
