“Two bowls of gruel.”

Lang Junxia’s words fell and the warm lights around him lighted up. Duan Ling was so sleepy that his eyes could not stay open very long, and he turned around in confusion, but was quickly awakened by Lang Junxia.

In the guest room, Xiao Er carried over two bowls of gruel. Lang Junxia handed one of them to Duan Ling. Duan Ling devoured the bowl of gruel as his eyes looked left and right and took a peek at Lang Junxia.

“Are you still hungry?” Lang Junxia asked.

Duan Ling looked at him in disbelief. Lang Junxia sat on the bed, but Duan Ling shrank into the bed, his face nervous.

Lang Junxia has never taken care of children, his expression is a little puzzled, and he has no sugar on him to coax the child with. After thinking about it, he took off a semicircular jade ornament from his waist, and said: “This is for you.”

The semicircular jade ornament was crystal clear, just like ice, but Duan Ling didn’t dare to take it, and his eyes moved again from the semicircular jade ornament to Lang Junxia’s face.

“Take it if you want.” Lang Junxia replied.

His words were warm, but his voice didn’t have any emotions, his fingers were holding the jade, and he handed it towards Duan Ling.

Duan Ling took it anxiously, flipped it over and over, and again turned his eyes towards Lang Junxia’s face.

“Who are you?” Duan Ling suddenly thought of someone and asked, “Are you… are you my father?

Lang Junxia did not answer. Duan Ling heard countless rumors about his father. Some people said that his father was a monster in the mountain. Some people said that his father was a beggar. Some people said that his father would come back to pick him up one day, that he was a wealthy man.

However, Lang Junxia replied: “No. Sorry to disappoint you, I am not.”

Duan Ling also felt that he was not his father so he wasn’t disappointed. Lang Junxia seemed to be thinking. When he stopped thinking, he layed Duan Ling down and covered him with a quilt and said: “Sleep.”

The wind and snow formed an echo at Duan Ling’s ear. Runan city was already forty miles away and Duan Ling had injuries all over his body.  As soon as he fell asleep, he suddenly got hit in his dream, and then he began to have nightmares as well.

He was twitching all over his body, sometimes even screaming and shivering.

Lang Junxia slept on the floor, however later at night he saw Duan Ling having a nightmare so he slept next to him. Whenever Duan Ling extended his hand out, Lang Junxia would hold his hand with his own and squeeze it. If this is repeated several times, Duan Ling would calm down.

The next day, Lang Junxia called for hot water, bathed Duan Ling, and wiped his whole body. Duan Ling was skinny, with scars on his arms and legs. The old wounds have not healed, and there were new injuries atop the wounds. The wounds tingled in the hot water. However, this sting was nothing, as Duan Ling was still playing with the jade ornament in his hands.

Duan Ling: “Are you sent by my father?”

“Hush.” Lang Junxia put his index finger in front of his lips and said, “Don’t ask, don’t ask anything, I will slowly tell you later.”

“If someone asks you, answer them by saying your surname is Duan and your father’s name is Duan Sheng.” Lang Junxia said, “You and I are from the family of Duans in Shangzi, your father was doing business in Xichuan at Shangjing and he entrusted you to his uncle’s house. Now that you are older, your father sent me to pick you up and take you to Shangjing to learn, do you understand?”

Lang Junxia put some medicine on Duan Ling’s wounds, placed an unlined garment on him, and then wrapped him in a slightly bigger sable fur coat, let him sit down, and then stared at his eyes.

Duan Ling was dubious and looked at Lang Junxia, then finally nodded after a while.

 “Say it yourself.”

“My father is called Duan Sheng.”

The horse galloped toward the bank of the river, Lang Junxia turned over and dismounted, led the horse to the frozen ferry, and guided the horse with Duan Ling on it across the river.

“I am a family member of the Duan family in Shangzi……” Duan Ling repeated.

“Going to Shangjing to study……” Duan Ling was drowsy and was unstable on the horse.

Thousands of miles away, when the Yubi gates closed, Li Jianhong moved forward with difficulty.

He was scalded. He staggered, there were fractures all over his body. The only company he had was the sword on his back and the red string tied around his neck.

The red string was strung through a pendant, which was crystal clear and translucent, but it was a flawless white jade.

A gust of wind swept away the snow on the jade, showing a warm fluorescence in the dark.

At the end of the distant heavens and earth, on another jade, there seems to be a powerful force beckoning, that is the Xianbei Mountain beyond the reach of the eagle, the Dongquan River where fish can’t swim, that strength is just across the river, on the other side. It is frustration, but also fate.

That power seemed to be rooted in his soul, flowing in his blood, supporting him to go forward.

In the wind and snow, what sound seems to be approaching, is it a wolf running in the wilderness, or a whirlwind that will destroy the world?

 “Ben Xiao!” Li Jianhong shouted.

A black horse with four hoofs and white snow on its back galloped towards him.

 “Ben Xiao–!”

The hissing sound of the horse pierced the sky and rushed towards Li Jianhong. Li Jianhong dragged the horse rein, exhausted all his strength, flipped his body, and fell on its back.

“Go!” Li Jianhong shouted and disappeared into the snow with Ben Xiao.

Crossing the river and going north, there was smoke along the way, but the weather was getting colder and colder. Lang Junxia told Duan Ling about some interesting things from the capital. Duan Ling gradually forgot about his worries and his pain.

Duan Ling’s nightmares were like his wound, both of them gradually healed. The wound on his back had already formed scabs, and some parts of the scabs had already fallen off. Lang Junxia finally ended this long journey, and Duan Ling also saw the most prosperous city in his life.

The terrace shone in the colour of the sea, the horse crossed the western section of the Xianbei mountain. As the sun goes down, a red light emerges from the endless wilderness. The Jin river was like a belt, and weaved through the city, shining the sheen of a glacier.

In the twilight, Shangjing stood tall.

“We’re here.” Lang Junxia said to Duan Ling.

Duan Ling was wrapped tightly, because it has gotten really cold along the way. He was held in the arms by Lang Junxia. The two immediately looked at the far-reaching Shangjing. Duan Ling’s eyes narrowed slightly and he felt very warm.

When he arrived at Shangjing, it was exactly nightfall and the gate was guarded. Lang Junxia handed out the document, and the guard noticed Duan Ling.

“Where did you come from?” The guard asked.

Duan Ling stared at the guard, and the guard stared at Duan Ling.

“My father’s name is Duan Sheng.” Duan Ling had already memorised it well and replied, “I’m a family member of the Duan family in Shangzi.”

The guard interrupted his narration impatiently and asked: “What is your relationship with one another?”

Duan Ling looked at Lang Junxia.

“I am a friend of his father .” Lang Junxia replied.

The guard looked at the document and then reluctantly let them in. The city is brightly lit, and the streets are covered with snow. It is the end of the year. Roadside drunkards were holding bottles of wine. There were singers, and also people sitting or lying down outside the brightly lit distillery.

The geisha’s greedy greeting leaked a minute or two into the night, and the warrior armed with a sword stopped to look up. Wealthy businessmen who got drunk wobbled and nearly knocked over a noodle stall. The carriage jingled and passed the icy road. The bearer drank, and the magnificent carriage steadily left the ground, heading towards the capital.

No horses were allowed on the main road so Lang Junxia got down and let Duan Ling stay on the horse. He held the horse’s rein and walked forward. Duan Ling’s face was covered everywhere until there was only a gap left, and his eyes looked at everything curiously from the gap of the fur hat. After turning into the side alley, Lang Junxia flipped himself back onto the horse and galloped into the alley.

The sound of music was left behind, but the lights were still bright. The red lanterns on both sides of the quiet alley hung high. Only the horseshoe tapped on the ice, making a slight cracking sound. In the depths of the alley, there are countless two-story secluded houses, the lanterns are layered over the top of the roof, and even the light snow is blocked by this warm light.

They were at the back door in a dark alley when Lang Junxia said to Duan Ling: “Get down.”

There was a beggar sitting outside the back door. Lang Junxia didn’t look at him, he just flicked a broken silver which fell in the beggar’s bowl. Duan Ling looked sideways at the beggar curiously, then Lang Junxia straightened him up, patted off the snow on him and led him in. Lang Junxia walked through the familiar house, passed by the flower gallery and the middle yard, and reached the side hall. He heard the sound of “ding dong” along the way.

Entering the side hall, Lang Junxia seemed relieved and said: “Sit. Are you hungry?”

Duan Ling shook his head. Lang Junxia let him sit in front of the fire, while he kneeled on one knee. He took off his jacket, dried his boots, took off his earmuffs and then sat cross-legged in front of him while observing him. His eyes held a little gentleness, which was hidden so deep, just mare flash passing by.

“Is this your home?” Duan Ling asked in doubt.

Lang Junxia said: “ We will stay in this house for a while. After some time, I will take you to your new house.”

Duan Ling always remembered Lang Junxia’s phrase, “don’t ask any questions”, so he rarely asked questions along the way, hiding all the doubts in his heart, like a restless and alert rabbit but on the surface he was very quiet and calm. It was Lang Junxia who actively explained to him instead.

“Is it cold?” Lang Junxia asked again, and then held Duan Ling’s icy feet in his big hand, rubbed it a few times, frowned and said: “You are too weak.”

“I thought you would not come again.” A girl’s clear voice rang behind Lang Junxia.

Following the voice, Duan Ling looked up and saw a beautiful girl wearing an embroidered jacket outside the door, followed by two servants.

“I went out to do something.” Lang Junxia didn’t look back, untied Duan Ling’s belt, and turned around to open the baggage. He took out the dry clothes and let him put on his outer robe, then he took time to look back at the girl. The girl walked into the room and looked down at Duan Ling.

Duan Ling looked uncomfortable by her, and frowned, but the girl opened her mouth and asked: “Who is this?”

Duan Ling sat upright, the same paragraph passing through his mind: I am Duan Ling,  my father’s name is Duan Sheng……

However before Duan Ling could say anything, Lang Junxia answered for him.

“This is Duan Ling.” Lang Junxia said to Duan Ling: “This is Lady Ding.”

According to the etiquette that Lang Junxia taught him, Duan Ling clenched his fist and looked at her up and down. The girl’s name was Ding Zhi, but she smiled first towards Duan Ling and said: “I have seen Duan gongzi [gongzi: young master] before.”

“Has the person from the north courtyard been here?” Lang Junxia asked absently.

“He did not come for three months.” Ding Zhi sat down and told the maid: “Go get some snacks to fill this Duan gongzi stomach.”

Ding Zhi personally poured a cup of tea, and handed it to Lang Junxia. Lang Junxia took it and tasted it. “Ginger tea, to drive away the chills.” After that he handed it to Duan Ling.

Along their journey, whatever Duan Ling eats or drinks, Lang Junxia will taste it first, to see if it’s delicious. Duan Ling is already used to it, but when he drank the tea, he saw that Ding Zhi’s eyes had an unclear emotion. Her beautiful and clear eyes were wrinkling slightly, staring at him with intensity.

Ding Zhi’s maidservant served dim sum, which was what Duan Ling had never seen or heard before. Lang Junxia seemed to know his habits, and reminded: “Eat slowly, there will be dinner later.”

Along their journey, Lang Junxia repeatedly told him not to gobble up whatever he ate, which was contrary to Duan Ling’s habit, but he had to listen to Lang Junxia, and he gradually realised that no one would snatch his food. He took a piece of dim sum in his hand and he ate it slowly. Ding Zhi just sat quietly, as if anything that occurred did not concern her.

It wasn’t until two food boxes were brought that Lang Junxia asked Duan Ling to sit on the stool in front of the food boxes, indicating that he could eat. Ding Zhi took the warm wine jug and knelt beside Lang Junxia to pour wine.

Lang Junxia raised his hand and blocked the glass with his finger, saying: “Drinking is wrong.”

“The tribute wine given last month.” Ding Zhi said, “You don’t want to try it? Madam specifically prepared it for when you come back and drink.”

Lang Junxia didn’t refuse, he drank a glass, Ding Zhi added another, Lang Junxia drank again, Ding Zhi added a third glass, Lang Junxia turned over the glass after drinking, preventing her from pouring another glass.

When Lang Junxia was drinking, Duan Ling kept staring.

Ding Zhi wanted to pour wine for Duan Ling, but Lang Junxia stretched out two fingers, pinched her sleeve to prevent her from passing.

“I can’t let him drink wine.” Lang Junxia said.

Ding Zhi smiled at Duan Ling and made a helpless expression.

Duan Ling wanted to have a drink, but his obedience towards Lang Junxia defeated his desire for wine.

Duan Ling was eating dinner, and he couldn’t help but guess where this place is, and what is the relationship between Lang Junxia and this girl? For a moment, his expression flickered, and he kept glancing at Lang Junxia and the girl, just wanting to hear them talk more.

Even until today, Lang Junxia still hadn’t told Duan Ling why he brought him here. Does Lady Ding know? Why didn’t she ask him about his origin?

Lady Ding looked at Duan Ling from time to time, as if she was thinking about something. Soon, Duan Ling put down his chopsticks, and she finally opened her mouth.

“Does this dish suit your palate?” Ding Zhi asked.

Duan Ling replied: “I have never eaten this dish before, it is delicious.”

Ding Zhi laughed, and the maid took away the food container. Ding Zhi said: “I will retreat now.”

 “Go.” Lang Junxia said.

“How many days will you be staying in the capital?” Ding Zhi asked again.

“Once I stay, I won’t be leaving anymore.” Lang Junxia replied.

Ding Zhi’s eyes seemed to light up, she smiled slightly, and said to the maidservant, “Send the lord and Duan gongzi to another courtyard.”

The maidservant walked in front with a lantern, while Lang Junxia wrapped Duan Ling with his wolf cloak. He picked him up and walked through the corridor, then came to another courtyard full of green bamboo. Duan Ling heard the sound of a broken cup in another room not far away, followed by a man drunk and cursing.

“Don’t look around.” Lang Junxia said to Duan Ling, carrying him into the room and threw a few words at the maidservant who followed them: “No need to wait for us.”

The maidservant bowed and retreated. The room was full of mild fragrances, and even though the brazier was not seen, the room was still very warm. There was a chimney outside the room straight into the ground, producing the smoke given out by the fire of an earth dragon.

Lang Junxia asked Duan Ling to gargle but he was too sleepy. He laid on the bed in a single shirt. Lang Junxia sat beside the bed and said: “I’ll take you shopping tomorrow.”

“Really?” Duan Ling got up.

Lang Junxia said: “I’m going to sleep in the next room.”

Duan Ling was pulling on Lang Junxia’s sleeve, a little disappointed. Lang Junxia did not understand him, so he looked at Duan Ling and understood after a while– Duan Ling wanted to sleep with him.

Ever since he left the Duan family, Lang Junxia has never been separated from Duan Ling, eating together and sleeping at night. Now that Lang Junxia is leaving, Duan Ling can’t help but be afraid.

“Then…..” Lang Junxia hesitated slightly and said, “Forget it, I’ll accompany you.”

Lang Junxia unbuttoned his shirt, revealing his bare and strong chest, embracing Duan Ling, and Duan Ling rested on his strong and powerful arm.Like when they were still on the journey, his eyelids became heavy and he gradually fell asleep.

Lang Junxia had a good smell of masculinity, and Duan Ling was already used to his robe and his body, as if it was lulling him to sleep, and he would no longer have any nightmares. He has gone through too many things today, and his mind is filled with countless complicated information. He had too many dreams in one night and all the different dreams appeared one after another, it seemed never ending.

The snow stopped in the middle of the night, and the world was unusually quiet. Countless dreams piled up from the sea to the sky, causing Duan Ling to toss and turn unconsciously, and he turned only to hug the warm blanket.

The Lang Junxia around him was nowhere to be seen, and Duan Ling’s body remained in the middle of the quilt. Duan Ling was tense and overwhelmed, and he walked out of the bed lightly and opened the door to go out.

In the next room, the lights shone through, and Duan Ling walked barefoot through the corridor, tipping his toes and looking into the window pane.

The room was wide and bright, with half of the curtain hanging down, and Lang Junxia was undressing with his back to the pane.

His collar was tied directly under his throat, and he untied it patiently, hanging his robe aside. As soon as his clothes fell, it immediately showed a broad back, a toned waistline, and a firm hip. The naked body was unobstructed, the lines were like lean and sturdy horses, and the body looked like it was full of power, his member was clearly visible.

Duan Ling held his breath, his heart was beating wildly, he could not help but take a step back, and knocked down the flower stand.

“Who is it?” Lang Junxia turned back.
